What's on your Christmas list?

These are just some interesting facts to think about as you do your Christmas shopping.

1 carot diamond ring - $5000

Average yearly wage in Sierra Leone, home of some of the worlds largest diamond mines - $500

It's not my intention for this to be some self-righteous "shame on you for buying stuff for Christmas" post. As I am confronted with statistics like these, I honestly don't know what to think, how to act, or how I should change the way I live. As I think about all I will give and get for Christmas, my heart is heavy and deeply moved by the reality of such unimaginable poverty on such a large scale.

Good stuff, Geoff. My heart is heavy as well this season...not sure how I can go about the usual "business" of Christmas, knowing the faces and names of the men who sleep in the ditches in Gulfport.

God has put a name (names, actually) on poverty for me and I'm sitting here in my nice warm house, Christmas decorations strewn about me, looking at a bare tree and wondering if I can do this at all...so much of what I've always considered "important" at Christmas just seems silly right now.
