I've noticed recently that the days are becoming shorter and the temperature cooler, and that can only mean we are bearing down on my favorite time of year--winter.I love the winter. I know a lot of people hate it. Some go south with the geese to warmer weather. Others simply stay inside and count the days till spring. I love winter, though.
I'm not exactly sure why I think it is so great. Nothing beats the cold, brisk air, especially on a clear morning, but that's not what makes me really love winter. Some people enjoy getting to cozy up next to the fire place when the temperature drops, but I don't have a fire place and probably wouldn't like the smoke smell even if I did. Snow makes the season bearable for a good many people, but I'm really not all that crazy about it, either.
When winter comes many people dread the cold, dark, gray dullness of the winter landscape, longing for the bright, full of life colors of spring to reemerge. As strange as it sounds, though, I think that is the part of winter I really love. I realize that seems weird, but I’ve been like that for a long time now.
I’m not sure why, but I love the gray. I love the quiet deadness. I love the cold, wet, gloominess and not seeing the sun for a month at a time. I suppose it could be for a lot of reasons. Maybe the obsessive-compulsive side of me just needs the balance. I don’t know. Maybe the absence of color and light and life offers me a striking reminder of the brokenness of the world we live in. Maybe my melancholic temperament somehow identifies with it, or maybe I feel like it represents all of the cold, lonely, defeated parts of me that I rarely show. Maybe I’m just crazy! I’m really not sure, but I love winter, and there is something about it that continually strikes me and plays a chord in my heart and mind like very little else in life.

im with you man....seriously....i love winter more than any season...coldness, gray, silence, its great.
I'm a fan myself....but then, I tend to be a little bit like the winter, so maybe I relate to it as well.
Well, coming from a place that has 11 months of summer, I can promise you I love winter too. The contrast to the summer is exciting! And it leaves me anxiosly awaiting returning to Illinois in December.
ILLINOIS IN DECEMBER?!?!?! might there be a matt wallace sighting in the Fairfield area, or chance of a sighting in the matton area at a local restaurant perhaps?
When I tell people about my love of winter, I usually get the worst looks in the world... like I said I like to kick old people in the knees or something.
who do you talk to? telletubbies? spring flowers? young teenagers in love?
Herschel, I really want to answer that question with "your mom" like we used to say to each other when we were 14 and stupid, but instead I will say that I talk to lots of people... at church, in the mall, wherever I am... and almost without exception they give that "are you nuts" look when I mention that I am looking forward to winter.
OK GEOFF, up until now I've yet to read anything on this blog i whole-heartedly disagreed with. Today, that's changed.
First off, I will agree with you on the love of winter. Its not that I like being cold, or the grey deadness. For me its 2 things: Snow, and Winter Clothes :)
Secondly, one should not be considered stupid for possessing a love of the "your mom" joke. It's funny you said that because it goes on between me and Hersch daily. I am deeply hurt and offended at your remarks towards one of my favorite pastimes.
Oh, and ask your mom if she's seen my black sock. ;)
your mom is deeply hurt by geoffs disdain for one of your favorite pastimes...
dang yo...
